We’ve been asking you all week whether you think the UFC should make the middleweight clash between MMA legend, Wanderlei Silva and former WEC light heavyweight champion, Brian Stann happen next for both men, and while it was a close call it seems the majority of fans would like to see it.
Let’s face it, the middleweight division is in somewhat of a state of flux right now and the promotion needs to start making some legit challengers out of what’s left. Hell, the current champion, Anderson Silva is fighting a guy next week who’s not fought at since January 2009, two year ago… With the likes of Michael Bisping and Nate Marquardt already set up with fights, Chael Sonnen shelved due to legal matters and Alan Belcher battling his eye condition is doesn’t exactly leave a lot of options as far as opponents are concerned for “The Axe Murderer”.
Ok, ok, you have Chris Leben and Yoshihiro Akiyama but like I said, the UFC’s goal isn’t to set up meaningless exciting fights, it’s to consistently create challengers for the champion to face, and with both of these men coming off losses, a win for anyone just wouldn’t do that. As far as Stann is concerned, people have seen him struggle at light heavyweight since coming to the UFC, defeat Mike Massenzio in the third round and are asking is this guy really any good. The first round TKO win over Leben helped with the believability of the former U.S. Marine but still the name “Brian Stann” doesn’t have a pop to it, it’s not exciting right now. The way I look at it Stann deserves his shot at Wanderlei right now because no one else does… Hardly the most resounding reason for granting the fight but still, it’s the only reason that makes sense right now…
