A bantamweight brouhaha between Norifumi Yamamoto and Damacio Page is now off the table for the UFC 135 prelims at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo., on Sept. 24, 2011.The promotion announced today that both 135-pound sluggers were felled by injuries during training camp.
Yamamoto made his long-awaited Octagon debut at UFC 126 earlier this year, losing a frustrating unanimous decision to Demetrious Johnson. "Mighty Mouse" leveraged his strong wrestling skills to keep the dangerous Japanese striker on his back for most of the 15-minute fight.
He was expected to return to action against Chris Cariaso at UFC 130 on Memorial Day weekend; however, an injury sustained during training forced Yamamoto off the card.
History seems to have a way of repeating itself.
Page also dropped his Octagon debut, succumbing to a Brian Bowles guillotine choke at UFC on Versus 3 back in March 2011. In the fight prior, he also lost to the aforementioned Johnson via the aforementioned guillotine choke.
No word yet on whether "The Angel of Death" will keep the "Kid" bout alive as they head home to lick their wounds.
UFC 135 will feature a main event between light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, defending his 205-pound world title against Quinton Jackson. Former welterweight champion Matt Hughes is also penciled in to return to the Octagon to face the original "Ultimate Fighter," Diego Sanchez.
