It has today been revealed that Strikeforce lightweight champion, Gilbert Melendez will put his title on the line against top contender, Jorge Masvidal on December 19th, although where the fight will take place remains a mystery at this point.
A source close to the situation confirmed the news to MMAJunkie.com earlier today, with the California based promotion likely to follow up with an official announcement in the near future.
Melendez was last seen in action in April, destroying top rated Japanese fighter Tatsuya Kawajiri in the very first round. Prior to that he’d knocked off DREAM champion, Shinya Aoki via unanimous decision.
As for Masvidal, he turned on the style to defeat former EliteXC 160 pound champion, K.J. Noons in June, winning the fight via unanimous decision. Strikeforce CEO, Scott Coker had previously said the winner would become the number one contender at 155 pounds.
