UFC on Versus 3: Mark Scanlon out, Matt Riddle in against Matt Brown on March 3 in Louisville
"The Immortal" gets what could be his final chance with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) -- but it won't be against Mark Scanlon as previously reported.
Instead, Matt Brown (11-10) will throw hands against fellow Ultimate Fighter (TUF) alum Matt Riddle (5-2) after an undisclosed injury forced Scanlon to withdraw from the upcoming UFC on Versus 3 event on March 3 in Louisville, KY.
Sources close to one of the fight camps alerted MMAmania.com to the change in opponents earlier today.
Brown has managed to stay employed in the world's largest fight promotion despite three straight submission losses, the usual kiss of death in the new-look Zuffa, where roster cuts have become more frequent and aggressive.
If he has any chance of staying active in the busy 170-pound division, it will take more than his balls-to-the-wall offense, it will take a convincing win over Riddle.
Riddle saw defeat for just the second time in his UFC career, falling to Sean Pierson via unanimous decision in a Dec. 11 slugfest back at UFC 124 in Montreal.
The loss snapped a two fight winning streak that included victories over Greg Soto (disqualification) at last June's UFC 111: "St. Pierre vs. Hardy" event and DaMarques Johnson (technical knockout) at UFC on Versus 2: "Jones vs. Matyushenko" in August.
UFC on Versus 3 will feature a main event showdown between Diego "Nightmare" Sanchez and Martin "The Hitman" Kampmann while middleweights Mark Munoz and C.B. Dollaway do battle for a spot in the 185-pound title hunt.
A welterweight barn-burner between Dan "The Outlaw" Hardy and Anthony "Rumble" Johnson is also possible for the network television event.
