Overeem charged with one count of misdemeanor battery

The Las Vegas Review Journal is reporting that UFC heavyweight contender Alistair Overeem was charged with one count of misdemeanor battery, relating to an incident on New Year's weekend at the Wynn Las Vegas, in which a woman was cuased to stagger back from a push or shove.
Although the charge sounds absurd - Overeem caused a drunk to stumble on New Years Eve - the heavyweight contender faces a maximum of six months in jail, and a maximum of $1,000 in fines.
No arrest was made; Overeem was instead given a citation.
Nevade law defines Misdemeanor Battery (NRS §200.390) as "Any willful and unlawful use of force or violence upon the person of another." Battery differs from an assault because the suspect must have intent and actual force must be applied to the victim’s body.

According to the District Attorney's office, Overeem is scheduled to appear in court at 8 a.m. on Feb. 21.
A citation issued by Las Vegas police stated at about 3 a.m. on Jan. 2, Overeem pushed or shoved a woman in the face, "causing her to stagger back."
Overeem has retained famed Las Vegas defense attorney David Chesnoff.
"Alistair was not arrested, but was summoned to court," Chesnoff said. "There are two sides to this story and we intend on vigorously defending this. Alistair maintains his innocence."
