Canadian mixed martial artist Marc Holst (8-3) says his next MMA fight will be his last.
The former UFC lightweight announced Friday that he has decided to hang up his four-ounce gloves in order to focus on tournament competition and the opening of a new martial arts school.
"I decided to take a step back and work on my weaknesses," he wrote Friday on his personal website.
Holst is expected to meet Markhaile Wedderburn at an event dubbed "Wreck MMA" on Jan. 28 at Casino de Lac-Leamy in Gatineau, Quebec.
Nicknamed "Boots," Holst amassed an 8-1 record in regional competition before making his octagon debut this past June at The Ultimate Fighter 11 Finale as a replacement for Paul Taylor, who was not medically cleared to fight. He took on veteran John Gunderson and was outworked en route to a unanimous decision loss.
Holst, an Ottawa, Ontario, native, attempted to right his ship four months later when he took on Paul Sass at UFC 120, but he instead met disappointment after falling prey to Sass' trademark triangle choke in the first round. He was released by the UFC shortly afterward.
Holst earned his octagon contract in mid-2010 with an upset submission victory over "The Ultimate Fighter 5" vet Corey Hill.
"I think this is a smart move that will allow me to improve and expand my knowledge in martial arts," he stated.
