UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior Dos Santos has finally signed with Nike, as reported on his official Facebook page. Original text in Brazilian Portuguese appears at bottom.
The UFC heavyweight champion will rise to the Octagon to defend his title on December 29 in Las Vegas, wearing Nike, his new sponsor. The company confirmed on Monday that the Brazilian is their newest hire. The agreement between JDS and the the world's leading supplier of athletic shoes and apparel started when he signed an agreement with the Brazilian Soccer team Corinthians, which is also sponsored by Nike, to make an associated gym, Paulista, part of his preparation for the fight against Cain Velasquez.
"Junior Cigano is a top athlete and to have him on team Nike is an honor," said Louis Alexander, director of sports marketing for Nike in Brazil. "A top athlete is never satisfied. He always wants more - more wins, more titles, better products. Such is the power that moves the brand."
With the new contract, Junior joins champions Anderson Silva, the biggest name in the sport worldwide, and Jon Jones, the biggest name in sport in the USA, who also have agreements with bigests sporting goods company in the world. Nike did not disclose whether the contract with the Brazilian will be restricted to the Brazil, or if it also involves promotional activities outside Brazil.
