UFC 131 PLAY-BY-PLAY LIVE FACEBOOK STREAM COMMENTARY:
The General in control.
Krzysztof Soszynski vs. Mike Massenzio
Round one: Uh-oh, quick reverse takedown from Massenzio. Quick level change and they're clinched up against the cage. Not a lot of action before the break. Massenzio pushes through with a double leg takedown. K-Sos wall walks his way back to his feet. Trading low leg kicks. Soszynski stuffs a takedown and lands a right hand on the way out. Massenzio answers with some decent shots of his own. Leg kick and another takedown from Massenzio. Half guard and he might take this round if he can keep this position. K-Sos pushes him off and gets back to his feet right as I say that. Massenzio pushes him against the cage and the ref wastes no time in separating them. K-Sos pushes forward and Massenzio shoots in. Too telegraphed, as K-Sos sprawls out of it. Soszynski lands a nice shot and Massenzio dives in for another takedown. Again, though, nice sprawl. Not sure how to score this one. 10-10

Round two: Massenzio opens again with a takedown attempt and K-Sos is sprawling his way out. Looks like he's got a front headlock. Nope. Mike controlling the wrist and there is literally no activity. Massenzio is just sitting there holding Soszynski's wrist. He finally stands up. clinched against the cage with underhooks. They break and Massenzio looks a little worn. Pushes forward with punches, though. Another sloppy shot that K-Sos sprawls right out of and back to wrist control from Massenzio. Just ugly. Another shot from Massenzio and K-Sos stops the takedown without sprawling and simply using the cage to his advantage. Mike won't give up the single leg. The ref calls for action but he won't find much of it here. He calls for a reset and it takes about three seconds for Massenzio to shoot in and get stuffed. K-Sos lands a couple big punches before another shot from Mike gets stuffed to end the round. 10-9  Soszynski

Round three: They stop short of a bro hug to start the third. Clinch work against the cage. K-Sos lands a knee. Massenzio shoots in and K-Sos sprawls before quickly taking his back. Massenzio gets to his back and K-Sos is in side control. Uh-oh. Patented kimura time? Doesn't look like it. Wrist control from Massenzio and he's in the fetal position eating elbows to the body. K-Sos grabs the wrist and he's looking for the kimura. Massenzio is essentially just playing defense. Big knees to the body from K-Sos. Massenzio is just taking it. Soszynski is working hard to get something here and a scramble leads to a bulldog choke but an eventual stand-up. The ref breaks the two up with about 45 seconds left in the fight. This has been one of the worst preliminary cards I've ever seen. Massenzio again looks for the takedown. He did take this fight on short notice, one weight class above his. The round ends and it's clear who the winner is in this one. 10-9 Soszynski
Final result: Krzysztof Soszynski def. Mike Massenzio via unanimous decision
-end-
James Head vs. Nick Ring
Round one: Ring comes out throwing outside leg kicks. Head lets them happen. Push kick. Answers a leg kick with a straight right. Head pushing forward. Gets locked into a clinch and eats a knee. Ring landing some nice shots here. Straight left connects. Ring feints and shoots in for a takedown. Effortless. Straight into side control. Head rolls into full guard. Backs out a bit, enough to let Head get back to his feet. Head gets feisty and lands a knee with a punch behind it. Oh shit, lands a big punch that puts Ring on his ass. Head rushes him and Ring just grabs hold. They reset and Ring is slower. Head pouring it on and he's landing big knees from the Thai Plum. Front kick from Ring lands clean and backs Head off. Another good right from Head but Ring grabs him up and takes him down. Half guard is open but Ring is doing much. Looks to land elbows. A couple punches before the round ends. Looked good early for Ring, then he got rocked, then he came back to finish on top. Ugh. Uh.... 10-9 Ring.

Round two: Ring quickly gets the takedown. His momentum carries him over and Head tries to keep control of his head but it doesn't work. Ring locks up a triangle from the top and Head might be screwed. Ring loses it. Odd. Switches over to the other side. North-south position now. Head gets back to half guard. Ring gets another takedown and he's landing big shots. He opens up a cut and he's landing bombs. Head looks done. Loses position and gets dumped on his head but he recovers. Head is bleeding profusely and Herb Dean stops it to have the doctor check it. Dean restarts the fight exactly as they were before the stoppage, Ring in side control. He lands a few big elbows and Head looks all but done. Ring is just doing work on the floor. Head will make it out of the round but he's a sitting duck in the third. 10-9 Ring

Round three: Head is in slow motion here. Ring is fresh as a cucumber. Oh, lands a nice left hand. Misses a big left hook behind it. Easy takedown from Ring. Head threatens with a guillotine for a very short time but Ring easily pops his head out. Ring stands up and lands a body shot. Head looks like he just wants out. Ring is too much to overcome. Still on top and dropping short elbows. Head gets back to full guard but Ring stands up and pushes his legs over and gets to side control ... again. Back to north-south position and over to side control again. More elbows and Head is completely gone. Ring looks to take his back but Head scrambles out. Locks in a rear-naked choke and Head taps quickly. Didn't even have a single hook in. Head wanted out.
Final result: Nick Ring def. James Head via submission (rear-naked choke)
-end-
Darren Elkins vs. Michihiro Omigawa
Round one: I immediately don't like this fight, simply because it's not easy to type these guys names in real-time speed. Maybe I'll refer to them as Elk and Omi. Here we go, Maniacs. Omigawa bouncing and switching stances early. Elkins attacking with some short shots. Omi moving light but not throwing much. Lot of goofy shoulder movement. Hands are low and he's herky-jerky. Oh, nice straight left. This unorthodox thing seems to be working. Right as I say that, Elk lands a nice right. Omi is dropping down and eating punches. Elk with a lot of foot movement. Elk gets a takedown and Omi immediately looks for a leg. Elk starts bucking like he's got a bug on him and stands back up. Exchanging punches now and Elk looks to be getting the better of it. That's based on sheer volume if nothing else. And the stream busts out and says "Please stand by." Uh, okay. Made the switch to Facebook and haven't lost much time. Story is the same, too. Elk looking for a takedown off a leg kick but couldn't grab it. Landed a right on the way out though and the round ends. 10-9 Elkins

Round two: They come out fast and exchanging big. Elkins landing a few nice shots. Omigawa is clearly the aggressor. Wonder how that's being looked at by the judges. Nice body kick. Ton of exchanging and Omigawa breaks it off with a leg kick. Rogan seems to be infatuated with Omigawa. He's using Elkins busted up face as his basis for Omi winning the fight but he's wrong. Elkins is steadily landing cleaner shots. Omigawa lands a nice left but Elk follows it with a strong right. Another one. Some good shots from Elkins but he's bleeding progressively worse. Elkins eats a punch and dives for a takedown but misses badly. Another round for Elkins, though. 10-9 Elkins

Round three: Again, both guys are super aggressive to start the round. Omigawa uses Elkins momentum to take him down and into half guard. Elkins briefly threatens with a guillotine but doesn't have it. Gets back to full guard. Omi working on top for punches. Elkins throws his legs up for a triangle but doesn't get it. Scramble and Elkins uses a whizzer to get to his feet. Elkins is really bloody now. Goldie tells us that's how we know Omi is landing a lot of punches. Solid right hand from Elk. He's circling a lot and jumping in with punches. Action has slowed considerably. Elkins is landing more often, or at least it looks like he is, but Omigawa clearly has a lot more power on his punches. Not sure the kind of effect that will have on the scorecards. The round ends without much emphasis on closing and I'll give that one to Omigawa but the fight to Elkins. 10-9 Omigawa
Final result: Darren Elkins def. Michihiro Omigawa via unanimous decision
-end-
Dustin Poirier vs. Jason Young
Round one: Man, they don't play around with these preliminary fights. As soon as one ends, the next one is about to begin. Off we go. Jason Young is British with the most American name ever. They rush in and throw bombs and both guys land decent. Young grabs a hold of an arm, working for the kimura. Can't get it, though, and Poirier gets back up. They reverse each other against the cage. Poirier lands some big shots. Young responds with a knee. Poirier comes back with a flying knee of his own. Damn, these two are swinging big like Beltran and Rosa were. Looks a lot less sloppy, though. Nice straight left. Young answers with a looping right. Low kick goes errant but the fight stays rolling. Young falls on a missed high kick but Dustin can't capitalize. Leg kicks exchanged. The round ends and that was a close one. 10-9 Poirier

Round two: Right leg kick from Young. And another. Double round kick and another kick inside and low. Poirier answers with a body kick. Wheel kick from Young and Dustin clinches up. Inside leg kick lands to the nuts and Big John McCarthy stops it. That's twice now and Big John tells Poirier he wont' tell him again and next time he'll take a point away. Scalding. Young landing nice and clean with these leg kicks and Poirier looks nothing like the aggressive killer he did in the first round. Young is really pushing the pace and doing what he wants. Rogan says it's because of Poirier's legs and how Young has been chopping them down. I won't disagree. Much slower pace now from both guys. Flying knee attempt from Young misses and Poirier answers with a body kick. They exchange big and Poirier gets a late takedown. Hopefully that doesn't win him the round. 10-9 Young

Round three: Young lands a nice left to start. He looks a lot fresher than Poirier here. Dustin lands a decent right hand after an exchange. It leads to a clinch and Poirier has a double leg with Young wrapped around his neck. Young has underhooks, though. Young absolutely not allowing the takedown here, as it might cost him the fight. Dustin manages to trip the leg and finally completes the takedown. Not good news for Young. He's doing his best to control the arm and he gets back up. Goes down again but springs back and pushes Poirier against the fence. Poirier reverses him against the cage and he's working a single leg now. He gets the takedown and he's working with it. Passes to half with Young working hard from the bottom. That last round wasn't much but probably enough to earn Dustin the win. 10-9 Poirier
Final result: Dustin Poirier def. Jason Young via unanimous decision
-end-
Aaron Rosa vs. Joey Beltran
Round one: The big boys are up and throwing bombs. Not really. Their punches don't look like they have much on them. Beltran clinches up with Rosa and pushes him against the cage. Rosa trys to circle out and eats a few big shots for his trouble. Beltran is landing some nice shots in the clinch now. Rosa is the bigger guy but he's getting muscled up against the fence. The ref ask for work but I'm not sure what he's watching. They respond though, pushing off the cage and just starting throwing bombs. Boom, boom, boom, boom, back and forth just throwing punches. Nothing of any substance lands but it was fun while it lasted. A bit more exchanging and the gas tank might be depleting quickly. Beltran aggressive here, pushing forward with big punches. Rosa not backing down from the fight, exchanging right there with him, but he's letting Beltran push him up against the fence. He'll lose the round for that. Rosa is bleeding out of his nose, too. Nice short elbows from Beltran on the inside. Jesus, these two are insane. Beltran backs off the clinch and they start just throwing bombs again. 10-9 Beltran.

Round two: Beltran opens with a low leg kick and Rosa presses forward. Rosa the one pushing the action to start the second. Smart move. He was letting Joey just back him down in that first frame. Beltran lands a leg kick before blitzing with punches and landing one or two clean on the chin. Rosa can take a shot but he's losing this fight. Beltran using the clinch quite a bit. They're both in their exchanging and it's consistently Beltran getting the better of it. Big knee from Beltran lands low and good god, that was vicious. Ref asks for a doctor. He ate the knee to the nuts and as he was going down, Beltran popped him with a knee to the face. Jesus, that was rough. Rosa is back up and at it with about two minutes left in the round. Push kick from the big guy. Beltran gets caught on the way in and Rosa turns it up and moves in with big shots. Abrupt stoppage and apparently Beltran got clipped in the nuts. Whoa. Yep. Ate a big one. They restart and I'm surprised both guys are still working so hard. Cardio, FTW. Beltran looks to clinch and eats an uppercut to get it.
