Nine fights now occupy the card for Bellator Fighting Championships 58, as the Chicago-based promotion recently ratified a middleweight bout between former tournament competitors Jared Hess and Brett Cooper.
The 185-pound affair is one of three fights currently in the running for a spot on the evening’s MTV2-broadcast main card. Bellator is allowing fans to vote for either Hess-Cooper, Jessica Aguilar versus Lisa Ellis-Ward, or Farkhad Sharipov versus Fabio Mello by tweeting their preference to CEO Bjorn Rebney; voting closes Friday at noon ET.
Emanating from the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla., the event will be headlined by Eddie Alvarez’s lightweight title defense against fourth-season tournament winner Michael Chandler.
Bellator’s middleweight king, Hector Lombard, will also compete against UFC veteran Trevor Prangley in the non-title co-main event. Additionally, onetime Sengoku featherweight titleholder Marlon Sandro will be in action, squaring off with former WEC talent Rafael Dias.
Hess, 28, has lost two of his last three fights, most recently falling to Bryan Baker on Sept. 17 in the Season 5 middleweight tournament quarterfinals. The Oklahoman debuted with Bellator in 2009, fighting his way to the final round of the company’s inaugural 185-pound tournament before being stopped by Lombard.
Known as “Fudoshin,” Cooper rides a two-fight win streak heading into his showdown with Hess. Cooper competed in Bellator’s second-season welterweight tournament in 2010 but was outpointed by Steve Carl in the quarterfinals. Since that defeat, the 24-year-old has earned wins in four of his last five outings, notching victories over Valdir Araujo and Joe Doerksen in 2011.
