Rich Franklin out until at least late summer after undergoing shoulder surgery

Today brought a bit of both good and bad news regarding the future of former UFC middleweight champ Rich Franklin who is currently sidelined with a torn shoulder labrum.

According to a press release from Franklin’s representatives, “Ace” underwent surgery yesterday to repair the damage and things went successfully meaning the 37-year old is expected to make a full recovery. However, the rehabilitation process could take up to six months if not longer meaning Franklin won’t be ready to fight again until after the midway point of 2012.

“I spoke with Rich, he’s feeling great and as soon as the doctor gives him the go-ahead, he’s ready to start training again,” said manager JT Stewart. “If everything goes as expected, UFC fans could see (him) back in the Octagon in late summer.”

The news confirms Franklin will only compete a single time in 2011 as was also the case in 2010. His only in-ring appearance this year came at UFC 126 where he came up short on the scorecards in an thrilling throwdown with Forrest Griffin. He was expected to fight Antonio Rogerio Nogueira at UFC 133 before “Little Nog” went out with an injury.

Franklin holds an overall record of 28-6 in a career almost certainly earning him a place in the UFC Hall of Fame. Among his numerous wins, twenty-five of which have come via some form of stoppage, are past victories over Ken Shamrock, Evan Tanner, Yushin Okami, Matt Hamill, and Chuck Liddell.
