This was the match-up of rising contender Daniel Cormier and grizzled player Jeff Monson at the Strikeforce: "Overeem vs. Werdum" event in Dallas, Texas.
Not only was "The Snowman" taking on a younger, more athletic fighter, he was also making his debut in the hexagon ... on short notice, no less.
It showed.
Monson never quite looked comfortable, as Cormier outworked, overpowered and downright had his way with him, earning the decision win after three rounds of controlling the action.
Cormier may be an elite wrestler but he had no designs of taking down the jiu-jitsu player he was up against tonight.
It actually served him well to keep the fight on the feet, as he was able to get to the punch much quicker and land solid combinations all throughout the fight.
Monson has one hell of a chin -- he was able to stand in the pocket and counter with a hard shot or two of his own -- but he was clearly over-matched.
Through the first two rounds, Cormier outlanded Monson 64-9 in power shots, according to CompuStrike.
That's domination, folks.
This is unquestionably the biggest win of "DC's" career and one that should put him straight into contention in the Strikeforce heavyweight division.
