Frankie Edgar's injured back, not ribs, forced cancellation of UFC 130 fight with Gray Maynard

Let's all take a step "back" for a minute.
Shortly after the announcement that the Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard main event at UFC 130 was in need of postponement due to injuries suffered by both men, reports revealed a rib injury to the former and a knee injury to the latter.
Not so fast.
Turns out, the actual "Answer" to what happened is not what we've been hearing ... not exactly.
While his ribs are, in fact, causing him trouble, the main culprit in Edgar's inability to fight on May 28 is his back, which has apparently been giving him problems for quite some time.
Don't take my word for it. Straight from the horses mouth (via UFC.com):
Star-divide
"All of the reports are talking about my ribs, it's actually my back. My back's been bothering me for quite some time. A few weeks ago I had to take a week off so that my back could calm down and I was trying to fight through it. I got through it and it kept blowing out on me here and there but then I ended up blowing out a rib last week. My rib kept popping in and out and then last week my back went out on me really bad, so I went to see a doctor and he said I've got bulging discs and now I'm going to go see a specialist to see what he can do about it. I saw a UFC doctor yesterday and he said my L2 and L5 discs are bulged, and he recommended that I don't fight right now. I can't even put my socks on or hold my kids, it's pretty bad right now."
Ouch.
Later on, Edgar explains he had every intention of going through with the fight so as not to force the eventual outcome of a postponement. Maynard was also reportedly going to fight through his knee injury; however, cooler heads prevailed and an August or September date is now planned for the third fight.
That may or may not be a possibility depending on the severity of Frankie's injury. As he explains, ""I don't know how long I'll be out. I'm hoping surgery won't be an option right now, I'm hoping I can rehab it and get better and get back to training in a month, but I can't give you any solid answer right now as to how long I'll be out."
The good news -- if there can be any -- for both the champion and the challenger is the recent announcement of health insurance coverage for any and all training related injuries.
