Josuel Distak, the Muay Thai coach of UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, has been giving his thoughts on the current 205 pound champion, Jon Jones, explaining former champion, Lyoto Machida could very well be the man to frustrate the young champion into making the biggest mistake of his career. Speaking via Tatame Magazine, Distak said:
“He’s evolving, he still is pretty young, so it’s likely that he handles weight better, he’s tall, his reach is big… I don’t know if he’ll make it in this division for long. I guess Jon Jones will be coming up soon, for the big body he has.”
“Jon Jones is a kid who’s showing much evolvement on the sport. In my point of view, as a MMA coach and scholar of the art, I guess Lyoto is the man who can beat Jon Jones down because he has a completely different game. I didn’t see Jon Jones fighting a guy who likes to counter-attack, so I believe Lyoto is a hard opponent for Jon Jones on the light heavyweight division. Maybe Jones has some difficulties finding Lyoto on the octagon and, since he’s young, maybe he’ll get frustrated and loses his temper, which would be a great thing for Lyoto.”
Machida could take a major step towards putting himself back in title contention later this month when he goes head-to-head with Randy Couture at UFC 129 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The big question is though is there anyone in the 205 pound division good enough to take the title from the dynamic Jones, even Machida?
