All the talk, all the hype, all the quotes and cliches came to an end tonight, March 19, 2011, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, at UFC 128: "Shogun vs. Jones."
The questions have all been answered and we now know that Jon Jones is who we thought he was and tonight was the night to crown his ass, as he emphatically took the 205-pound title from Mauricio Rua by way of technical knockout in round three.
The powerful, young and hungry beast came out and absolutely dominated the fight from horn to horn. At no point did he appear to be in trouble against the seasoned veteran Rua.
"Bones" opened the fight with a flying knee and continued to utilize his unorthodox strikes to batter and bruise the champion.
It was said coming in that Jones is the future -- well, the future is now.
Star-divide
After coming out with the big knee, Jones earned a takedown and landed the devastating elbows that have made him famous in his budding mixed martial arts career.
He gamely avoided every attempt Rua made at grasping for a limb or throwing his legs over for a submission.
Simply put, he was too big, too strong and too new school for the battle-tested former PRIDE champion.
"Shogun" will surely bounce back, as he's faced this adversity before but it has to be disheartening to lose the way he did.
As for the freshly crowned champion, we can start the countdown to Jones vs. Evans and speculate all day and night on whether that fight will come to be.
The bigger question, however, is this -- who can stop this monster?
