Take two.
Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez will put his title on the line against Pat Curran on April 2 at Bellator 39 on the promotion's new TV home of MTV2. No venue has been announced for the event at this time.
These two were originally set to do battle after Curran won the season two lightweight tournament. However, he suffered a shoulder injury and Roger Huerta stepped in for a non-title scrap.
Alvarez pummeled "El Matador," stopping the UFC veteran in two rounds on the cage side doctor's orders. A fight against current Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez, which "The Silent Assassin" badly wanted, was then heavily speculated on but never came to fruition.
The Philadelphia native will have to settle for a young upstart from the Land of Lincoln.
Star-divide
Pat Curran is just 23-years of age but has already compiled an impressive 12-3 record as a professional mixed martial artist.
That includes his three tournament wins under the Bellator banner that earned him his shot at the number four ranked lightweight, not to mention the 155-pound strap.
Is he ready for such a daunting challenge?
Bellator 39 is currently rumored for April 2 and will presumably be headlined by Alvarez vs. Curran for the lightweight championship. Ben Saunders vs. Matt Sung Lee is also possible to take place at the event.
