BAMMA 5 results: Paul Daley knocks out Yuya Shirai in the first round
It's hard not to respect a man for calling his shot, especially when he comes through on it.
That's what Paul Daley did in the main event of BAMMA 5, which emanated from the MEN Arena in Manchester, England today (Feb. 26, 2011), when he viciously knocked out DEEP Welterweight Champion Yuya Shirai.
After missing weight for the bout, "Semtex" remarked that he planned on making up for it by not only knocking his opponent out, but doing so in the very first round.
He did exactly that with a brilliant uppercut, left hook combination that spelled the end for the Japanese judo specialist, who was stalked the entirety of the fight and simply looked over-matched.
It took a few minutes for Shirai to make his way back to the land of the conscious and provided a stirring message for a certain Strikeforce welterweight in Stockton, CA.
When it was announced that Paul Daley was to be given a shot at Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz, it seemed rather odd that he would risk his impending title shot by accepting a booking overseas.
Same goes for Scott Coker and company, who were hedging their bets on the heavy-handed Brit to go in and take care of business.
Luckily for them, that's exactly what he did.
It sets up a welterweight title fight against reigning division champion Nick Diaz, potentially as soon as the planned April 9 show in California.
