Recently the management for Florida-based fighter Yoislandy Izquierdo reported that the athlete was being kept from a UFC contract due to a previous contractual arrangement with the Championship Fighting Alliance, (CFA).
Izquierdo’s manager Alfred Munoz reported that the CFA demadned a startling 25% of the fighter’s purse and sponsorships spanning his entire UFC career. Munoz characterised the offer as 'unfair' and counter offered to pay 10% of Izquierdo’s show and win purse, as well as 10% of the fighter’s sponsorship money for two fights.
Below, the CFA flatly denies the charge.
Recently, Cuba Izquierdo made some comments about his relationship with the CFA. Although the CFA continues to provide Cuba with its full support, we are sorry to see that Cuba simply does not understand the amount of effort and commitment the CFA has made to advance MMA in Florida. CFA was created for the purpose of exposing the wealth of talent that exists in South Florida. While other MMA companies have been unsuccessful, the CFA has flourished and grown. CFA has worked tirelessly in its goal to bring national attention to all of its fighters. It would be simple for us to simply put on local events, but instead, the CFA is constantly expanding its prominence in the MMA community. In fact, the proof of CFA’s success is that a CFA Champion was exposed to the UFC and the national spotlight. This is exactly what we want for all of our fighters and exactly why a lot of money has been invested for all of you.
Cuba is a great fighter and we tried hard to help him move on to the UFC stage. However, after reading the claims made by Cuba, it is very clear that he simply did not understand, or was ill advised, as to his agreement with the CFA.
First and foremost, CFA never demanded 25% of Cuba’s contract with the UFC. In fact, Cuba representatives offered a 5% and sought to cash in on Cuba’s success and asked the CFA to pay monthly amounts to them as part of Cuba’s deal. Unfortunately, CFA responded that it was only interested in helping Cuba not his representatives. CFA did not feel that it was appropriate to have anyone other than Cuba trying to cash in on his title as the CFA Champion. In the end, it appears that Cuba neither did not want to understand, did not want to listen or was simply not told the extent that CFA was trying to help him.
Form the start; Cuba did not understand the mutual commitment that exists with the CFA. We provided him with everything that the contract required, and provided him with the vehicle for his success. CFA never tried to stop his advancement. Instead, CFA merely required prior written approval before he could simply sign a contract with another MMA company.
The CFA contract spells out the very clear terms that were drafted to protect the fighter and the significant CFA investment in all of our fighters. Why else would CFA work so hard to introduce all of you to the UFC and help you jump to National attention. That is exactly what we want for all of you and exactly what we wanted for Cuba.
However, instead, Cuba chose to fight with the very people that gave him his shot and the very people that supported him way before he was exposed to the UFC. That is not what CFA wanted for Cuba but in the end, it was his decision. Although no one at the CFA has ever heard Cuba personally reject the 10% offer, his representatives were the ones that said that Cuba rejected all of CFA’s efforts. We can only hope that Cuba was told the simple truth...the only thing the CFA demanded was that Cuba’s contract with the UFC should not be used by his representation for their desire for money from CFA.
CFA will continue to support Cuba and we look forward to his continued success. We will also continue to advance all of the CFA fighters and remain committed to our goal of taking the South Florida talent to the National and International stage. As we fight together for your advancement, all of us will win!
Thank you,
-Championship Fighting Alliance
