Expect anything less than 150% from the Texas based Mexican fighter. With a record of nine wins and five losses, the Bantamweight will be taking on BAMMA debutant Paul ‘Metabolic’ Mcveigh in a fight that will light the fuse of the main card on the night. With Mcveigh chomping at the bit to get in the cage, Perez tells Graham Finney how he is desperate to show British fight fans what he can do, despite his previous first round win at BAMMA. Whether the fight goes to ground or both fighters stand up and trade, you can be sure this fight alone will justify the cost of the ticket.
Erik, thanks for your time, how is training going ahead of the BAMMA fight?
“No problem. Everything is going great in my fight camp, and I have really been putting the work in. I can’t wait for 10th December!”
You had a first round win over James Brum in your last fight. What do you remember of that fight?
“I remember the whole fight, and although I won in the first round by submission, I was not completely satisfied with my performance. James was a late replacement and I knew nothing about him at all. People very rarely want to stand with me, so I expected him to try and take me down. I really wanted to make a statement in my first fight for BAMMA, but people can expect a lot more from me in my next fight.”
Was that the first time you had fought in the UK and how different was the show compared to some of the US shows you've fought on?
“Yeah it was my first time in the UK. The event was great and I was very well looked after. I have fought on some big shows in the USA and in Mexico, so I didn’t feel any extra pressure even though I was fighting a guy from the UK. I flew in early and stayed with my good friend and BAMMA Middleweight Champion Tom Watson so I had enough time to adjust to the time difference and train a little before the fight.”
Your opponent Paul Mcveigh is making his BAMMA debut, what do you know about him?
“I actually don't know much about him at all. All I do know is that he is ranked No.1 in Europe and has good submissions. I hope he decides to come out and throw down with me because I would love to put on a great fight for the fans and make Mexico proud. I am sure he will come out and try to take me down and I will be prepared for wherever the fight goes but regardless it is going to be a great fight. I can't wait.”
What can fight fans expect from your performance on December 10th?
“They can expect me to come out, give my all, and walk away with the win. I am not flying half way across the world to make up the numbers; I am coming to take out whoever is put in front of me and get my hands on the title.”
Looking at your fight record seven of your wins have come in the first round, is it fair to say you like to get your fights over quickly?
“As they say in this game you don’t get paid for overtime! I don’t expect to win these fights within a round but when an opportunity presents itself I take it and finish the fight. I know my fight record shows a lot of submission wins but that is because people just want to take me down. If they want to do that, I will play their game and submit them, but I prefer to stand up and throw leather.”
Thanks for your time Erik and good luck at BAMMA. To finish, what are your goals for 2012?
“Thank you, my goal for 2012 is simple. To fight the best guys out there and get the BAMMA Bantamweight Title around my waist!”
