It's not often fight fans get the chance to watch Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem ply his craft inside the confines of the hexagon.
That's why it's a real treat when he finally makes his way back, which is what he did tonight in a heavyweight grand prix quarterfinal bout against former nemesis Fabricio Werdum.
It was a rematch of a 2006 fight that saw "Vai Cavalo" submit "The Reem" in the second round via kimura. Could he do it again in the rematch?
Nope.
The fight can best be described as comical. Werdum wanted to fight on the floor, while Overeem only wanted to stand and trade. In this instance, they literally canceled each other out.
It made for a dreadful affair.
Werdum did throw plenty of punches but his game was largely predicated on pulling guard and playing possum. When Overeem wouldn't fall for it, all the air was sucked out of the arena at the nonexistent action
