The co-main event of UFC 130: "Rampage vs. Hamill" tonight, May 28, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada, featured a titanic heavyweight tilt with former champion Frank Mir taking on Roy Nelson.
The sometimes training partners, who both make their home in "Sin City" are well-publicized comrades. But what's a fight between friends, eh?
Well, in this case, it was one hell of an exciting opening round that lead to a couple of blown up big men struggling through the final two frames.
So who struggled better?
That would be Mir, who used a superior wrestling and clinch game (with a little bit of judo flavor) to control and dictate the pace to earn himself a unanimous decision victory.
It wasn't the prettiest ... but it got the job done.
The opening round saw five money minutes, complete with technical stand-up striking, savvy submission attempts, strong wrestling and clinch game and even a sweet, sweet judo throw.
And then, the sloppiness.
Any time two 260-pound behemoth's climb inside the Octagon and get to tossing each other around, the wind is going to disappear ... and fast.
That was the case with both "Big Country" and Mir, who battled through fatigue and muscle atrophy to take it to the man that defeated him, in a grappling match no less, back in 2003.
