Even less than one week from UFC 129, where Georges St. Pierre will defend his welterweight title against Jake Shields, the fight on the public's mind remains "Rush" vs. Anderson Silva.
The latest to chime in with his thoughts on the matter is GSP training partner and current Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar, who tells Tatame he would love to see what would be the very definition of a superfight:
"I mean, there’s always gonna be someone new coming up to challenge you, but right now he has cleaned up the welterweight division almost twice (laughs). So, it’s gonna be tough for him to get some challenges, but I’m sure there’ll be kids coming up, you know. As a fan, yeah. I would love to see him fighting Anderson Silva. As a teammate and friend, it’s up to him. ... I think his best bet is getting him to the ground, and for Anderson is standing up. But I think Georges is more dynamic than most of the guys Anderson has fought, but as I said: Anderson has (been) running through everybody. So, as a fan, that’s a fight I’d love to see."Edgar makes clear the problem the UFC is facing with its welterweight division: St. Pierre has lapped the field and he's not slowing down.
Because of that, the time is seemingly right for the French-Canadian to make his move up to the 185-pound division with a "Spider" awaiting a potential date with him inside the Octagon.
First things first, though -- GSP has to defeat Shields in Toronto on April 30. Will he do it? And if he does, should he make the leap up to middleweight?
