UFC light heavyweight Thiago Silva (15-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) hopes to see a quick resolution to his run-in with the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
The UFC light heavyweight goes before the NSAC on April 7 in Las Vegas to address his failed drug test at UFC 125.
Silva on Wednesday admitted to using a urine adulterant to conceal his use of banned substances prior to his fight with Brandon Vera at the Jan. 1 event.
"This was a terrible decision on my part for which I will be punished," he said in a statement released to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "I am prepared to accept this punishment, learn from it and move on. I apologize to the commission, the UFC, Brandon Vera and the MMA fans."
NSAC executive director Keith Kizer on Thursday told MMAjunkie.com that Silva's appearance at the meeting will constitute a formal hearing on the matter. The commission will decide whether to levy suspensions and/or fines against the fighter.
Prior to Silva's request to appear at the April 7 meeting, Kizer had planned to request a temporary suspension of the fighter pending a formal hearing on the matter.
On Wednesday, Silva was served with a formal NSAC complaint after a second urinalysis revealed a substance that was "inconsistent with human urine," which indicated that he "submitted an adulterated and/or substituted specimen for testing for the urinalysis." Silva's first test was flagged, which prompted further testing by the Sports Medicine Research and Testing Laboratory, which is accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
Kizer on Wednesday said Silva's case may prompt changes to the NSAC's drug-testing protocol.
"It might be a situation where inspectors have to go really close and look," Kizer said.
Silva likely faces a fine and suspension, and the result of his win over Vera will likely be changed to a no-contest.
Silva's case is the first involving an MMA athlete using fake urine since late 2006, when Kevin Randleman attempted to conceal his use of prescription medication in a test administered for his fight against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at PRIDE 32.
