UFC 128 – Jon Jones coach has no doubt his man can stop Mauricio “Shogun” Rua on the feet in Newark

Mike Winklejohn, the coach of UFC light heavyweight number one contender Jon Jones, has been giving his thoughts on the stand-up aspect of the fight next weekend between the man dubbed “Bones” and his opponent, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, explaining in his mind his man has every chance of stopping the Brazilian on the feet.
Speaking via MMAWeekly.com, Winklejohn said:
“His length, his speed, he’s hurting people now in the gym with his stand-up, he’s not even having to wrestle. I think people are going to be real impressed. Honestly, I think he can beat Shogun standing up. Shogun’s incredible and dangerous and there’s a lot of things we’re going to have to worry about, but I think Jon could edge him if he wanted to. I’m not saying that’s our gameplan by any means.”
“I believe Jon Jones is going to be the legend. It’s not going to be the Muhammad Ali of that division, he’s just going to be the Jon Jones of that division. Kids are going to want to be Jon Jones when they grow up. Jon and I, this is something we talk about constantly, ‘who do you want to be when you grow up?’ and I want those kids to say Jon Jones.”
Jones is coming off a series of impressive wins inside the octagon, blowing through the likes of Stephan Bonnar, Brandon Vera, Vladimir Matyushenko and Ryan Bader. Can he add the ultra-talented Brazilian to that list of victims and claim the greatest prize of the all?
