“I have no plans to stop fighting,” Henderson said earlier today. “My body is feeling pretty good, and as long as I can still compete with the top guys, I’m going to stay in the sport.”
Up until now he has proven that he can still give anybody a run for their money. Admittedly his Strikeforce debut against Jake Shields did not go according to plan, but he still took the champion to a decision, and it shouldn’t be forgotten that in the first round he had him in all kinds of trouble.
If there were any doubts that he was losing his edge they were quickly dismissed when he KO’d Renato ‘Babalu’ Sobral in December.
Now Henderson is set to fight for another title on March 5th against Rafael ‘Feijao’ Cavalcante, and he has a similar script in mind for him.
“I definitely plan on trying to knock [Cavalcante] silly and pressure him the whole fight,” Henderson tells MMAJunkie.
While Feijao isn’t necessarily the biggest name opponent he’s ever fought, this is a huge fight for him.
In recent years he’s struggled to recapture the form that saw him become the PRIDE welterweight and middleweight champion. While he’s continued to remain in the spotlight, further silverware has now evaded him on three separate occasions against Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson and Anderson Silva for the light-heavyweight and middleweight belts respectively, and against Shields for the Strikeforce middleweight title.
A victory over Feijao, who’s 10 years his junior, would prove that Henderson is still a force to be reckoned with at the top level in his forties, while a defeats leaves him somewhat in limbo as far as future title shots go.
