Two of the competitors from this past Saturday's event, Matt Mitrione and Willamy Freire, are suspended indefinitely until cleared by doctors to fight.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today requested and received the list of suspensions from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. The commission doesn't release salary figures.
Mitrione picked up his fourth consecutive win against Tim Hague while Freire lost a decision to Waylon Lowe in his octagon debut.
"UFC Fight Night 23: UFC Fight for the Troops 2" took place Jan. 22 at Fort Hood in Texas, and the night's main card aired on Spike TV. The event is expected to raise millions of dollars for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund.
Mandatory eight- to 10-day suspensions were issued to all of the event's fighters as a precautionary measure. Three others – Evan Dunham, Hague and George Roop – were issued 31-day suspensions following knockout losses.
Mitrione, a veteran of "The Ultimate Fighter 10," shocked Hague early on with a fearsome striking attack and never let up. However, he injured himself in the process, and an orthopedic doctor will need to clear the second metacarpal in his left hand before he can get back in the cage.
Freire, meanwhile, could do little to employ his submission talents against the powerful wrestling of Lowe. He staged a late-fight comeback as Lowe ran low on gas and scored points on the feet. But in the end, Freire spent too much time on his back and lost the fight, two rounds to one, on all three judges' scorecards.
An orthopedic doctor now needs to clear his right hand, and a maxillofacial surgeon must OK his right cheek before he is fit to fight again.
The full list of suspensions includes:
- Evan Dunham: Suspended until Feb. 22 for precautionary reasons (TKO loss)
- Matt Mitrione: Suspended indefinitely due to injured second metacarpal in left hand; must be cleared by an orthopedic doctor
- Tim Hague: Suspended until Feb. 22 for precautionary reasons (TKO loss)
- George Roop: Suspended until Feb. 22 for precautionary reasons (TKO loss)
- Willamy Freire: Suspended indefinitely due to right-hand and right-cheek injuries; must be cleared by an orthopedic doctor and maxillofacial surgeon
