Junior dos Santos recently said he plans to fight before getting his shot at the heavyweight title when champ Cain Velasquez returns from a six-plus month layoff and the top contender hopes the matchup will be
for an interim belt:
“Of course, it would be amazing to face Velasquez at UFC: Rio in August, but I cannot stay away from the Octagon for a year just waiting for him to recover, I really think that the fairest thing to do would be for [UFC President] Dana [White] to give me the opportunity to fight for an interim belt. I’m 100 percent focused on getting this belt.”
It remains to be seen if the UFC will arrange an interim title bout or who would challenge dos Santos for the belt, as Frank Mir and Roy Nelson
meet at May’s UFC 130, Shane Carwin just recently resumed training, and there’s been no word of former champ Brock Lesnar’s return.
