EXCLUSIVE: UFC set to decide against May event in Scotland, promise of more events in the UK in 2011 is broken

MMABay can EXCLUSIVELY reveal that the UFC have all but discounted the possibility of putting on an event at the Braehead Arena in Scotland due to what they’re calling “date congestion”, making the four-six events in the UK in 2011 that was touted at the end of last year laughable.
A source close to the situation revealed the news to MMABay yesterday, saying that there was “nothing 100% confirmed but it will probably be Autumn now”. The promotion were still deciding between venues in Scotland and Liverpool but instead it appears they will scrap the idea altogether.
You will of course remember this little ditty from UK UFC President, Marshall Zelaznik just a couple of months ago…
“It’s looking very good. I was just in Vegas and we’re making some really good progress. I don’t know how close we are yet, but maybe in 60 days we could have a really exciting announcement about that.”
“I think that’s still the number, our budgeting and the numbers we use in our planning remain based on the four-to-six event scenario. There’s an appetite for it, and we have enough quality matches to make those very solid cards.”
At the time MMABay was more than a little sceptical that the promotion would put on more than even two fight cards in 2011, let alone four-six, but we were happy to be proved wrong. Now it appears that the UFC will return at some point over the Autumn months, giving UK fans the one card a year we’ve grown accustom to.
