On Feb 4, 2010 UFC President Dana White made his now famous remarks about Nick Diaz needing to play the game. "The kid is very talented. And he probably should be in the UFC," White said.
"You have to follow certain rules and guidelines. The last time Nick Diaz was in the UFC he got into a fist fight at the hospital."
Shortly thereafter Diaz was involved in the Strikeforce Brawl.
Diaz eventualy came into the UFC for a title fight against GSP, famously missed media duties, and was out of a title shot, and very nearly a job. Diaz was replaced vs. GSP by Condit, who was originally scheduled to fight BJ Penn, but GSP got hurt, and Penn eventually fought and lost to Diaz. Then Diaz fought Condit for the Interim title and lost amidst so much controversy that a rematch was agreed to. Diaz had to unretire to ask for the rematch, too.
If that sounds complex, well, that's Nick Diaz.
And now Diaz has tested positive for marijuana, and faces a suspension. As his first offense in 2007 merited six months, and longer term is in all likelihood in store, which means fighting in 2012 is off his table.
Earlier today UFC President has released a simple statement.
"I am beyond disappointed that he tested positive for marijuana," White said. "It is now in the hands of the Nevada State Athletic Commission."
The statement doubtless does not fully and accurately express how White feels at this time.
Regardless of how upsetting the episode is, UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta made it abundantly clear on twitter last night that when Diaz' suspension is lifted, he will be back in the UFC,
