UFC middleweight and former Sengoky standout, Jorge Santiago, has reportedly been released (again) of his obligations to the promotion following back-to-back losses at the hands of Brian Stann at UFC 130 and most recently Demian Maia at UFC 136.
Sources close to the situation told Tatame.com on Monday of his release; however, the American Top Team (ATT)-trained athlete has yet to corroborate the report at this time. Interestingly enough, his name is no longer on the roster of 185-pound talent on the UFC website.
This is Santiago’s second stint with the UFC. And he wasn’t exactly lights out in his first run with the organization, either, going only 1-2, which brings his career record inside the Octagon to an underwhelming 1-4.
Santiago found success outside of the UFC, going 11-1 with nine straight victories after his first departure from the company. In the process, he claimed the Sengoku middlweight title by defeating Kazuo Misaki in 2009 and also won the 2007 Strikeforce Middleweight Grand Prix, defeating Sean Salmon and Trevor Prangley on the same night.
He was given a second chance with the world's largest mixed martial arts promotion, but quickly ran into a tank of a man in Brian Stann who knocked him out in the second round this past Memorial Day. "The Sandman" was then matched up against fellow countrymen Demian Maia at UFC 136, which results in a lackluster unanimous decision loss to the Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner.
