A preliminary duel between unbeaten light heavyweights Lionel Lanham and Carlos “Guto” Filho has been added to Strikeforce “Challengers 17”, promotion officials announced on Saturday.
Headlined by a welterweight rubber match between Bobby Voelker and Roger Bowling, Strikeforce Challengers 17 goes down July 22 from the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. As Strikeforce’s first event held in Sin City, it will also showcase a pivotal 135-pound women’s battle between contenders Liz Carmouche and former champion Sarah Kaufman.
Lanham has yet to taste defeat in his four months as a professional, running through his first three opponents in less than five minutes combined. Representing Mean1 MMA and hailing from Albuquerque, N.M., Lanham last competed on May 27, finishing Eric McElroy in just 14 seconds at Shark Fights 15.
Filho rides five consecutive victories heading into his showdown with Lanham. The Brazilian has fought the entirety of his career in his homeland, debuting in 2005 and winning back-to-back bouts before taking a four-year hiatus from competition. Upon his return in 2010, the Imperial Athletics export picked up where he left off, finishing three opponents inside of six weeks. “Guto” most recently knocked out Gustavo Moia at Shooto Brazil 18, finishing his foe with a knee just 40 seconds into the contest.
