Krzysztof Soszynski isn't letting unexpected opponent changes dampen his spirit as he prepared to fighte in front of his Canadian fans Saturday night at Rogers Arena.
After scheduled opponents Anthony Perosh and Igor Pokrajac were both forced of the card with injuries, Mike Massenzio (12-4 MMA, 1-2 UFC) stepped in as the third opponent for Soszynski (25-11-1, 5-2 UFC).
Soszynski is 8-2 over his past 10 fights, and he hasn't let the changes affect his preparation leading into the Facebook-streamed fight, which takes place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
"It doesn't bother me at all," Soszynski recently told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio). "From one fighter to another, it doesn't matter. I'm there to fight whoever they put in front of me, whether it's four weeks' notice, five weeks' notice, or I have a full camp to train for the person.
"Some guys, when you're the champ and stuff like that – when you prepare for one certain person then you have to fight someone different – I'm sure that's difficult. But I'm still working my way up to that level, and I have to fight anyone they put in front of me, so I'm fine with it."
His opponents haven't been the only things to change. So has his training. In addition to working with striking coach Ed Buckley and his teammates at Reign Training Center, Soszynski has been working with the world-class fighters at Kings MMA.
"We get to go over there two or three times a week, and they come over to Reign as well," Soszynski said. "So, we have a really good relationship with (head coach) Rafael Cordeiro, Wanderlei (Silva), (Fabricio) Werdum and the great guys over there at Kings MMA. It's unbelievable to have two great gyms to train at on any given day, which is amazing."
Soszynski's exciting style has made him a fan favorite, and while he intends to implement his newly learned techniques, fans shouldn't worry about him becoming a dull fighter.
"I definitely take pride in the fact that I go out there and try to finish my fights," Soszynski said. "The ones with Stephan Bonnar were wars. My last one with Goran didn't work out that way. I should've finished him in the third. But I definitely take pride in knowing that I'm going out there to finish the fight and not just fighting safe or fighting not to lose. I take pride in that."
When Soszynski meets Massenzio, spectators should expect one thing: fireworks.
"You guys know me," Soszynski said. "(It's) all about having fun fights and making the fans want to see more. So, I'm really excited about the opportunity to fight."
