MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) first reported the fight this past weekend, and UFC officials since have confirmed the booking.
UFC 133, which also features Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis (and possibly featherweight champ Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes), takes place Aug. 6 in Philadelphia. The city's Wells Fargo Center plays host to the event.
UFC 133's main card airs live on pay-per-view, though it's not clear if Gustafsson vs. Matyushenko will be part of the broadcast.
While seven of Gustafsson's first nine career victories came via knockout, the 24-year-old Swedish prospect recently has posted back-to-back submission victories. His lone career loss came to unbeaten contender Phil Davis at UFC 112, which followed a KO win over Jared Hamann in his late-2009 octagon debut. The UFC 133 fight marks Gustafsson's first-ever bout in the U.S.
Matyushenko returns to the cage after a quick victory. "The Janitor" needed just 20 seconds to drop Jason Brilz at April's UFC 129 event, a result that lasted just four seconds more than a 1998 win over the infamous Anthony Macias. With a 4-1 in mark in his current UFC stint, Matyushenko has won five of his past six overall outings.
The latest UFC 133 card now includes:
- Champ Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes (for featherweight title)*
- Phil Davis vs. Rashad Evans
- Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Vitor Belfort
- Rich Franklin vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira
- Johny Hendricks vs. Mike Pierce
- Alexander Gustafsson vs. Vladimir Matyushenko
- Jorge Rivera vs. Alessio Sakara
- Mike Brown vs. Nam Phan
- Michael McDonald vs. Nick Pace
- Brian Ebersole vs. Dennis Hallman
- Riki Fukuda vs. Rafael "Sapo" Natal*
