And after his performance last night (April 9) at Strikeforce: "Diaz vs. Daley," the rest of the mixed martial arts world might be, too.
Melendez socked and rocked his way past Tatsuya Kawajiri, impressively putting a stamp on his dominance of the Strikeforce lightweight division. When he was done putting in an easy night's work against a ridiculously tough opponent, he took to the microphone to expound upon his unification ideas:
"I'll tell you what, I think it's time we unify some titles. Who wants to see me fight for that UFC title? Let's unify them in my hexagon. I'm the number one lightweight in the world, baby. I'm coming for the spot."
The UFC merging with the WEC brought a few top lightweights to the world's largest fight promotion, which clouded the 155-pound title picture. "El Nino's" dismantling of the San Jose based organization has clouded it even further.
Scott Coker speculated on a possible fight between Justin Wilcox and Jorge Masvidal as a number one contender fight but is that going to satisfy an increasingly restless fanbase; a fanbase hungry for the biggest fights possible?
Should Melendez be in line for a shot at the winner of Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard at UFC 130 on May 28? Are you ready for a title unification fight? Or does the lightweight division in the UFC need to sort itself out first?
