Barnett vs. Kharitonov – The Pride of Clashing Warriors
Few can argue with the destructive potential possessed by either former UFC Heavyweight Champion Josh Barnett or former Pride FC standout and Russian Airborne veteran Sergei Kharitonov.
Kharitonov (18-4 MMA) is on currently on phenomenal form; winning five of his last six bouts and finishing all of those opponents in the first round. His opening performance in the Heavyweight Grand Prix was a decimating first round knockout against another former UFC champion in Andre Arlovski.
Barnett (30-5 MMA) remains one of the most dangerous Heavyweights in the world and has every intention of running straight through the Russian destroyer and on to the tournament finals. The former UFC champion has amassed an incredible seven fight winning streak that dates back all the way to 2008. This, undoubtedly, has all the potential to be the defining Heavyweight moment of 2011.
Cormier vs. Silva – The Olympian takes on Big Foot
Undefeated Heavyweight sensation and Olympic wrestling machine Daniel Cormier takes on the always dangerous Antonio “Big Foot” Silva in the other half of the tournament bracket in an action packed encounter.
Cormier (8-0 MMA) has some of the best wrestling anywhere in Heavyweight mixed martial arts and his rise to the top has seen the AKA prospect finish six of his eight victims in the distance. Cormier looked impressive against UFC title challenger Jeff Monson in his last bout but, in Antonio Silva, he’ll have to deal with a very dangerous challenge.
“I train with the number one heavyweight in the world, so I get hit a lot. I've got two great striking coaches. I love kickboxing, boxing and striking, and because of that it’s allowed me to progress.” – Daniel Cormier
Silva (16-2 MMA) shocked the world when he defeated Fedor Emelianenko back in February and the brutally strong BJJ Black Belt will be looking to smash Cormier into the ground and move onwards towards the Heavyweight finals.
The Heavyweight Grand Prix has captured the imagination of the entire Mixed Martial Arts world and, on September 10th on Primetime, the spoils of war will be a place in the tournament finals.
Also on the card is a blistering Middleweight championship bout as champion Ronaldo Souza looks to defend his belt against the heavy handed Luke Rockhold in what is sure to be the elite grappler’s toughest title defense.
Roger Gracie will take on the explosive Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal in a Light Heavyweight war that has ignited the interest of the MMA community and Lightweights Maximo Blanco and Pat Healy will lock horns in a breakneck battle.
