EXCLUSIVE – Alistair Overeem: “Do I want to go to the UFC… yes. Do I need to go to the UFC… no. We’ll see how much they want me”

In an EXCLUSIVE chat with MMABay yesterday, K-1 World Grand-Prix champion, Alistair Overeem spoke candidly about his future, and in particular the possibility of him signing with the UFC in the coming months, admitting he would like to sign with the Las Vegas based promotion but there’s a value to the pursuits he’d be leaving behind by signing an exclusive contract.
Speaking following his latest seminar in Coventry, England, Overeem said about his future:

“It depends on many things. Bottom line, do I want to go to the UFC… yes. Do I need to go to the UFC… no. So I guess we’ll have to see what happens and see how much they want me. I’m in a good position where I have options and I’m a champion with other promotions. I like to stay active and fight often and to fight in the UFC it would mean I’d probably only fight twice a year. To give all of that up and make myself exclusive to one organisation I believe is worth something.”
Overeem was axed from the Strikeforce heavyweight grand-prix after it was revealed he’d be unable to compete in September due to a series of injuries. He has currently entered a 120-day negotiation period with Zuffa LLC. where I’m sure much posturing will be done by both sides over the next few months.
