Bellator 48: The Bellator Summer Series is getting hot and heavy

It's mainly getting heavy.
On Sat., Aug. 20 (2011), Bellator Fighting Championships (Bellator) will invade the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut, for Bellator 48.
The card will feature two heavyweight match-ups, in what will be an effort to showcase the newly "beefed up" division.
Bellator has recently become a familiar place for mixed martial arts (MMA) fans to watch some of the lighter weight fighters as they throw down in the cage.
Bellator Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Bjorn Rebney has made a concerted effort to bring in the big guns and put on some exciting heavyweight slugfests.
Will the move be successful?

Rebney spoke recently about the promotion's desire to foster the growth of the heavyweight division.

"We have to do as good a job as we've done with the lighter what classes, with the 205 (pounders) and heavyweights," Rebney said. "(The) 135, 145, 155, 170 (weight divisions) have really been the focus of the company, but now that we have to do the same sort of scouting job for 205 and up. I know my team will do it. I have an incredibly solid team working with me that can do it. I know we can get it done and that's really our main focus right now."

The first of the two plus-sized fights  will be between wrestler Cole Konrad and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and Strikeforce veteran Paul Buentello.
It's not a mystery what each fighter wants to accomplish and what their strategy will be. Buentello will be more than glad to stand and trade. Konrad will probably look to take the fight to the ground the first chance he gets.
Konrad is currently undefeated as a mixed martial arts, holding a record of 7-0. He will be looking to use his current momentum and show the world that he belongs on the big stage.
Buentello will be using the wealth of experience gained by way of 42 MMA fights to outclass his less knowledgable foe.
If we're being honest, it's one of those fights that has the potential to be a fast paced thriller that the fans talk about for weeks afterwards. It also has the potential to be a stinker full of stalemates and hands on hips. We hope for the former.
The second heavyweight match-up on the Bellator 48 card will pit UFC veteran Ricco Rodriguez against journeyman (and Kimbo-killer) Seth Petruzelli.
"Suave" is coming off a submission win over last minute fill-in Doug Williams at Shark Fights 17 on Jul. 15 in Frisco, Texas. It was quick. It was violent. It was a little embarrassing for Williams. It will be nice see Rodriguez getting a match-up against a more seasoned opponent. Rodriguez will be bringing a 12-fight win streak into the bout.
His opponent, Petruzelli, is probably most famous for beating Kevin Ferguson (aka: "Kimbo Slice") and ending Ferguson's MMA career in the process (much to the chagrin of some and the delight of others). "The Silver Back" will certainly be seen as the underdog in the fight, but anything can happen.
