The UFC 130: "Rampage vs. Hamill" undercard kicked off with a blistering bantamweight battle between Renan Barao and former WEC champion Cole Escovedo.
Barao entered the fight having not lost in his last 26 professional fights.
He kept the streak alive tonight.
While known for his spectacular jiu-jitsu skills, Barao also stepped up and went toe to toe with the original UFC featherweight champion on the feet.
Barao showcased an arsenal of flying knees, spinning back fists, head kicks, front kicks and jumping double kicks to more than hold his own with Escovedo.
What really scored the big points for the young Brazilian were his takedowns. Barao was able to score a big takedown in each round. While he wasn't able to do much damage from top position, he was successful in every takedown attempt.
Escovedo put on a spirited performance in the stand-up to keep the fight even in the striking department, but his wrestling defense is what cost him the fight.
He'll likely get another opportunity in the Octagon considering he took the fight on short notice and Zuffa looks kindly on those types of fighters.
For Barao, he's ready to jump up to the next level. Maybe a fight with fellow UFC 130 victor, Michael McDonald.
