Strikeforce likely Las Vegas-bound for Strikeforce Challengers 17 on July 22

Strikeforce is targeting Las Vegas for the next installment of Strikeforce Challengers, and the recently acquired promotion may make Sin City the permanent home of the series.

A source close to negotiations confirmed with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that July 22 is being targeted for an event, expected to be Strikeforce Challengers 17, to be held at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort.

ESPN.com first reported the news of the event.

On Friday Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer confirmed that Strikeforce's new parent company, the Zuffa LLC-owned Forza, has applied for a promoter's license in the state. The request has been placed on the NSAC's next meeting, which is expected to take place in mid-June.

It would be the first trip to Las Vegas for Strikeforce, which until its purchase this past March, was based in San Jose, Calif.

The Challengers series, which airs on Showtime, thus far has focused on smaller markets and smaller venues. It most recently touched down in Stockton, Calif., for "Strikeforce Challengers 15: Wilcox vs. Damm," and has traveled to Texas, Washington, Tennessee and Arizona, among other states.

Strikeforce Challengers 16 is slated for June 24 at ShoWare Center in Kent, Wash. It's the second time the promotion has occupied the venue.
