Nevada commission approves video monitors for judges at all UFC events in Las Vegas

There will be no excuses now.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) today (May 20) voted unanimously to allow monitors to be installed at all future events to be held in Las Vegas, starting with UFC 130: "Rampage vs. Hamill" on May 28.

According to the petition, the screens are designed "to afford each judge the opportunity to view the action in the limited instances where their direct line of sight is impaired or obstructed for whatever reason."
The feed on the monitors will be the same shown on larger screens suspended around arenas at UFC events. They will carry no audio feed and go black in between rounds.

The screens will be attached to a moveable arm next to each judges' seat. If a judge doesn't feel comfortable using the technology, each has the option to simply push it aside. All the costs associated with the technology will fall on the UFC.

Good news, indeed, although some might find it slightly troubling that judges will be allowed to simply shove the monitor aside if they do not find it to their liking.
But progress is progress, right?
Here's more from UFC rep Michael Mersch on how this thing will work with a few of the finer details.

"The technology will be utilized in the exact same way as the in-stadium boards, it will show the exact same feed," said attorney Michael Mersch. "There will be no audio component, so they won't be hearing announcers and be influenced by that. There will be no replays, so judges are not reviewing repeated footage."
So they won't be allowed to listen to Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan during the live broadcast, which means no undue influence on Forrest Griffin's underrated ground game or "Shogun" Rua's devastating leg kicks.
But will this new digital back-up be enough to rid the UFC of so many of the controversial decisions that have plagued the promotion for so long?
Time will tell.
The monitors will be in action for the first time since this measure passed at UFC 130 this upcoming Memorial Day weekend, which features a main event of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson taking on Matt "The Hammer" Hamill.
In addition, heavy-hitting heavyweight haulers Roy Nelson and Frank Mir will lock 'em up in the co-main event of the evening.
