That's when former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar was supposed to defend his championship strap against number one contender Shane Carwin, until a surprise onset of intestinal diverticulitis hospitalized him and forced the cancellation of his UFC 106 title fight.
The devastating illness, one doctors thought was serious enough to contemplate career-ending colon surgery, was conquered soon thereafter thanks to a variety of medical, holistic and mental treatments. "It was a miracle," exclaimed Lesnar.
Then again, maybe it wasn't.
That's because a recent flare-up of the intestinal disorder, severe enough to disrupt his current training camp, has forced the Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 13 coach to withdraw from his UFC 131 headliner against Junior dos Santos, a titanic tilt that was expected to name the division's new number one contender.
It still might, but now "Cigano" will have to conquer former Interim champion Shane Carwin on June 11 in Vancouver to earn a crack at reigning 265-pound kingpin Cain Velasquez.
That means UFC newcomer Jon Olav Einemo doesn't have a date to the big dance.
The grappling wizard was set to welcome "The Engineer" back from the injured reserves, also at UFC 131. The promotion has yet to announce a possible replacement, but told the press on today's media conference call a search is currently underway.
So there you have it.
Brock Lesnar is sick (again) and can't fight. Shane Carwin has been promoted to the UFC 131 main event and will throw hands with Junior dos Santos. The winner will probably get to challenge Cain Velasquez later this year.
