The first major Strikeforce event under the Zuffa banner was a relative ratings success, according to MMAWeekly.com, attracting an average of 528,000 viewers on Showtime.
"Diaz vs. Daley," which was held at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, Calif., on April 9, 2011, drew about 116,000 more to the premium cable channel than "Feijao vs. Henderson" last month.
However, "Diaz vs. Daley" didn't sniff the record-setting ratings that the first leg of the promotion's heavyweight grand prix tournament Strikeforce: "Emelianenko vs. 'Bigfoot'" pulled back on Feb. 12, 2011 (741,000).
And that's too bad. Because those who failed to tune-in over the weekend missed out on a fantastic evening of mixed martial arts action.
Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz and Paul Daley fought to what can only be described as one of the craziest opening rounds in MMA history, with the scrappy Stockton slugger scoring an improbable come-from-behind win via first round technical knockout.
There were several other intriguing battles as well, including Gilbert Melendez's complete and utter destruction of Japanese import Tatsuya Kawajiri and Gegard Mousasi's bizarre majority draw against Keith Jardine.
Shinya Aoki also turned Lyle Beerbohm into a "Fancy" pretzel but for the "Tobikan Judan," that's just another day at the office.
