Jon Jones was crowned UFC light heavyweight champion less than 24 hours ago, and already, folks are talking about his next fight.
"Bones" replaced his training partner, Rashad Evans, taking on Mauricio "Shogun" Rua on short notice in the UFC 128 main event. With a win, it would set up an awkward situation where Jones and Evans, fast friends, would be forced to fight.
Well, Jones did win, did he ever, destroying Rua in three rounds, which sets up a date with "Suga" inside the Octagon later this year.
It's a nightmare scenario for their trainers at Jackson-Winkeljohn Mixed Martial Arts Academy in New Mexico. One that unsurprisingly has at least on of them a little torn.
Mike Winkeljohn weighs in on the sticky situation (via Sherdog.com):
"I have to think about it. I have a dilemma in that Rashad kind of left our camp a couple of fights back, and I wasn’t in his corner in his last two fights because he was really training up in Denver. Jon Jones came in and I started working with Jon, so it’s kind of tough. I’ll have to figure that one out. I love Rashad to death. I think he’s much better than people even know. He could be scary for Jon. He has the tools to beat Jon Jones. So I’m not sure yet. I have to think about it."
Winkeljohn, who has trained both Jones and Evans, clearly has a major problem on his hands.
However, Evans declared before the fight that if Jones did win he'd file for divorce from his long-time camp, perhaps making his decision a little easier.
Then again, if he truly feels that Evans has the recipe to deconstruct Jones, is it wise to let him walk?
