Dana White uses MMA’s safety record to attempt to sway officials in the state of New York

UFC President, Dana White has been back on the campaign trail as far as legalising the sport of mixed martial arts in the state of New York is concerned, this time pointing to the excellent safety record MMA has compared to the likes of the NFL and NHL.
Speaking at the UFC 128 pre-fight press conference, Dana said:
“These guys don’t take the damage that NFL players take, or boxers, or guys from the NHL. Here’s the reality: This is the most regulated sport in the world. When you have these guys talking about, ‘Oh this shouldn’t be in this state’ or ‘this is brutal’ or this and that, the reality is when these guys fight, if they take any damage to the head … they’re put on a three-month medical suspension and cannot return until they’re seen by a doctor.”
“Because the guy has the ability to jump on top of him, the fight is usually stopped. These guys don’t take the damage that NFL players take, or boxers, or guys from the NHL. Guys in the NFL and NHL can’t miss three months. If a guy’s out three months for a concussion, there would be no football. There would be no NHL. That’s the difference. This sport’s a million times safer than both of them.”
The promotion has been lobbying hard over the past year in an attempt to force the powers that be in New York to relax their attitudes about the sport and legalise it as soon as possible. Despite this it seems to be a case of one step forward, two steps back as funding for any such move has been repeatedly withdraw from the budget.
