Following light nights action in Sydney, Australia we’d like to ask you whether a potential rematch between B.J. Penn and Jon Fitch should be for the welterweight title if current champion, Georges St. Pierre moves up and vacates the belt?
Let’s face it, the fight last night between Penn and Fitch was a bit of a strange one and left many people, including the fighters themselves scratching their heads. Penn sprung a surprise from the off which seemed to throw Fitch off his game, although the man from the American Kickboxing Academy found his stride late on in the fight and dominated the end of the fight. The big question is IF the rematch goes ahead will it be for more than just bragging rights.
Georges St. Pierre is due to take on Jake Shields on April 30th at UFC 129 and it seems likely that if he makes the move to middleweight he will vacate his 170 pound crown for good. That will leave the welterweight division without a champion and a lack of serious contenders at the top of the division. Many believe Thiago Alves is sill a win or two away from regaining his position at the top of the tree and Carlos Condit would also need a couple of wins. Dan Hardy has recently slipped down the ranks and Chris Lytle’s hopes of a title shot evaporated last night with a loss to Brian Ebersole. Other than these two, although Penn didn’t exactly seem to be the most enthusiastic last night following the fight, who else is there?
