UFN 23 – Yves Edwards talks about the misconception that you’ve made it once you’re a part of the UFC

MMA veteran, Yves Edwards has been speaking about the misconception that many fighters have that they’ve made it as soon as they’re a part of the UFC’s ranks, saying what they need to do is start to strive towards becoming a contender.
Speaking via MMAWeekly.com, Edwards said:
“Everybody wants to be in the UFC and everybody wants to say, ‘oh, I fought in the UFC.’ That’s not the ultimate goal. Some guys, once they get there, they really don’t even reassess. They don’t change things and say, ‘hey, I want to be a contender. I want to potentially go after that belt.’”
Edwards then spoke about the tough guys he trains with on a weekly basis and how they have helped him get ready for someone like Cody McKenzie.
“I always work with those guys because everyone in that gym is tough. They keep a high pace and the conditioning there is really, really good. So that was a big part of it. They’ve got some really good guys there. Jesse Juarez helped me a lot with the jiu-jitsu game for this fight. When you fight a guy like Cody who has a specialty move, you have to adjust (for) that. You can’t totally ignore it.”
The man dubbed “The Texas Gunslinger” improved his overall record to 39-16-1 with a dominant unanimous decision win over John Gunderson on his return to the octagon. Can he string a series of wins together heading into 2011 and stake a claim for a title shot?
