As expected, Bellator Fighting Championships signee Jay Hieron (19-4 MMA, 0-0 BFC) has will take part in the promotion's upcoming season-four welterweight tournament.
So will three-time Bellator veteran Steve Carl (11-2 MMA, 2-1 BFC).
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned from sources close to both fighters that Hieron and Carl will fill the final two spots of Bellator's 170-pound tournament and will face each other on March 5 at an event yet to be announced.
Official word on both fighters' inclusion in the tournament, as well as the March 5 event (which is believed to serve as the first season-four fight card) is expected shortly.
For Hieron, the fight represents his first contest following what will be just more than 13 months on the sidelines following a two-fight stint under the Strikeforce banner.
Hieron, who has also fought under the UFC, WEC, Affliction and IFL banners, among others, carries a seven-fight win streak into the matchup. Four of the victories came via decision, while three were earned via first-round stoppage.
Meanwhile, Carl fought his way into the tournament with a first-round technical submission win over Tyler Stinson this past August. Carl was also enrolled in Bellator's season-two welterweight tournament and advanced to the semifinals with an April 2010 victory over Brett Cooper. Carl was defeated in the semifinals by Dan Hornbuckle.
Hieron and Carl join officially announced participants "Judo" Jim Wallhead, Dan Hornbuckle, Rick Hawn, Brent Weedman, Chris Lozano and Lyman Good in the tourney, which airs on MTV2.
Bellator, which aired past seasons on ESPN Deportes and then FOX Sports Net, also is expected to host season-four tournaments in the featherweight, lightweight and light heavyweight divisions.
