Just hours before the news of John Hathaway dropping out of UFC 138 and Seth Baczynski stepping in against 'The Immortal' MMABLOGSPOT got an exclusive interview.
For you guys that dont know Matt he starred in the seventh season of The Ultimate Fighter ,he debut at The Ultimate Finale 7 where he defeated Matt Arroyo a season six contestant on The Ultimate Fighter. The fight was a rematch from their 2007 fight, which Brown also won via TKO, And in June this Year he come off a unanimous decision win over John Howard. Let’s learn a little more bout ‘The Immortal’:
How did you get into mma? Who is your idol?
I got into mma back when I was a teenager my buddy had some vhs's of the earlier UFC's. As soon as I watched I was hooked. I started buying instructional and practicing moves in the living room. I did a couple fights that were unsanctioned I usually got drunk beforehand but I kept winning. As for actually training I got a brochure at a fight for a gym in Columbus so I moved there with my brother, who already lived there, and started training.
How did you get the nickname ‘The Immortal’?
It's tattooed on my stomach, so a promoter at one of my amateur fights started using it as my ring name. I told him it wasn't my nickname but he introduced me that way anyway.
Are you looking forward to fighting in the UK again?
Not really, I don't care too much for long flights and travel unless it's a vacation. The fact that I am fighting is the only good thing about going there.
Do you think the crowds differ in the UK to the States?
I don't know honestly. I pay very little attention to the crowd.
The majority of your losses are by submission, is this something you
have been working on?
Yes. I work on all aspects of my game consistently.
Have you been watching the new TUF? Do you think being a contestant
prepares you better to becoming a UFC fighter?
Depends on the person. I think it helped me as I was very camera shy before the show. It also helped being able to train with high level fighters already successful in the UFC so you learn what it is like to be a full time fighter. I was fortunate to have Forrest Griffin as my coach in that he is a very dedicated, hard working guy that pushed us very hard everyday, so I learned what it is like to train for a fight properly.
With Twitter bonuses now in place are you an active tweeter and do you
enjoy connecting with the fans that way?
I am an active tweeter (@Iamtheimmortal). It's cool to be able to connect so easily with fans. I remember what it was like when I was an up and comer and would loved to have been able to connect with a UFC fighter so easily. So, I always try to reply and always give real responses, not just say something to get the conversation over.
Make an analysis of your 2011 for us and what's in store for 2012?
So far I only fought once in 2011 against John Howard. The fight went decent for me and I won so I am happy about that. I have mainly just been training my wrestling really hard and trying to improve on my weaknesses. In 2012 you can expect to see the best Matt Brown yet. I will continue to improve daily in all aspects of mma and life.
Also tell the guys at mmablogspot who your dream matchup would be!
with any fighter any division any organization whoever is pound for pound #1
I want to thank ‘The Immortal’ for taking time to do the interview
And wish him all the best for the future.
