Strikeforce Challengers 18 – A night of upsets in Las Vegas as Jorge Gurgel and Danillo Villefort lose

Strikeforce Challengers 18 went down last night in Las Vegas, Nevada and to say it didn’t go to scrip for the biggest names on the card would be an understatement after experienced veterans, Jorge Gurgel and Danillo Villefort lost via unanimous decision on the night.
The nights main event was contested between Gurgel and plucky rookie, Joe Duarte in what turned out to be a close and entertaining affair. Duarte was able to take this one to the ground at will, putting Gurgel on his back, somewhere we’ve rarely seen him of late. Despite his black belt in Jiu-Jitsu Gurgel was unable to secure a submission and therefore came out on the losing end this time around.
Villefort didn’t do much to hang onto his place on the Strikeforce roster as he went down at the hands of Nate James. After winning the first round Villefort looked totally spent at the start of the second, allowing James to take control and run out an easy winner in the end on the judges scorecards.
In other action Pat Healy used his massive size advantage to ease out Eric Wisely on the judges scorecards, riding his opponent from top position and smashing him throughout. Ronda Rousey picked up a submission win mainly down to the incompetence of referee Steve Mazzaghatti who stepped in before Sarah D’Alelio had even tapped to the armbar. In the bloodiest fight on the card Derrick Mehmen defeated Roy Jones via unanimous decision despite one of the biggest cuts ever seen opening up over his eye early in the second round. He was able to use his wrestling to control much of the fight.
