On Saturday, Aug. 27 (2011), former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski will look to recapture some of his past glory at ProElite 1 as he faces Ray Lopez.
"The Pitbull" was once a force to be reckoned with. He became famous for his fearsome fanged mouth-guard as well as his knockout power.
Live by the sword, die by the sword.
Arlovski has lost his last four fights in a row. Three of the four ended with Arlovski unconscious on the canvas. Fans and critics have questioned his chin. No one wants to see a fighter seriously injured in the ring or cage.
Quite frankly, Arlovski's getting kind of sick of hearing about it.
During a recent press conference, Arlovski lashed out when asked about his recent string of knockout losses.
"Come on, let's be f---ing serious. I'm already sick of f---ing stupid questions about head injuries and a weak chin. It's f---ing bulls--- and honestly, it pisses me off. Who says? I don't know. I'm feeling great. I'm in good shape and everything's fine. Do I look like a f---ing retired person or something? I don't understand. Next question."On Saturday night, Arlovski will have an opportunity to silence the critics and prove he can still fight. The flip-side of the coin is a dangerous one.
Arlovski's opponent, Lopez, currently holds a record of 5-2 as a mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter. Lopez has been training hard and feels he is up to the task.
"I've just been training literally nonstop. Eight to ten hours a day, sometimes from eight in the morning to nine at night. Going from here to other gyms. I sleep, wake up and do it again. Any place that will take me, I'll go. This is a very big step, so I have to make sure I'm ready."Lopez will also be giving up a decent amount of size to Arlovski. That doesn't bother him.
"There's really no way for me to make up the size difference. I just have a lot of heavier people (to spar with) that come in at like 265, 285. He (Arlovski) likes keeping his distance. He doesn't like the in-close type thing. He likes to keep the arm distance, because that's where his power is, so, my gameplan is to stay tight to his body."
