"The Carpenter," like many other 155-pound fighters who have "paid their dues" plying their trade in the Octagon for years, isn't too happy that "Showtime" was awarded an instant title shot when World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) was merged with the world's leading mixed martial arts promotion. That amazing opportunity, however, never came because lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and Gray Mayanrd battled to a draw earlier this year. Rather than sit on the sidelines and wait for "The Answer" and "The Bully" to settle their score, and mend their injuries, Pettis accepted a fight with perhaps the most game fighter competing in the division today. Guida, known for his relentless tenacity and bottomless gas tank, has been in wars with several of the top names in the sport today, including Roger Huerta, Nate Diaz, Diego Sanchez and Kenny Florian, among others. He doesn't always win, but he nearly dies trying. Pettis, meanwhile, has done all that has been asked of him, taking out Danny Castillo and Shane Roller, as well as besting Ben Henderson. Not too shabby. But is he in over his head against Guida and the rest of the UFC lightweight division? It seems as if he's not scared to prove Guida, and everyone else who tunes in, very wrong this Saturday night.
